Florida, Ohio, Texas and California teams dominate the ESPN, USA Today, Rise Magazine and Prep Nation high school gridiron rankings.
Though they were idle, the Northwestern Bulls of Miami, FL retained their lead in the United States prep school football polls following the Sept. 20-22 weekend games.
Top 25 polls are conducted by the ESPN sports television network, USA Today, Rise Magazine and the website Prep Nation. Northwestern was first in three of the September 24 polls and second in another. St. Xavier of Cincinnati had one first place, two seconds and one third.
When teams are awarded 25 points for first place, 24 for second, etc., in each of the four polls, the Bulls come up with 99 poll points and St. Xavier of Cincinnati with 96.
Katy, TX and Carroll High of Southlake, TX tied for third with 85 poll points each.
While the four polls were in general agreement on the top four, they went their separate ways after that. Prattville, AL, for instance, ranked third in one poll, but 6th, 15th and 21st in the others. Totalling the teams' four poll points provides some perspective to their rankings.
Mater Dei of Santa Ann, CA was fifth with 78 poll points and South Panola of Batesville, MS was sixth with 76.
Florida retained its state lead in the polls with four teams among the top 25, scoring a total of 234 poll points. Ohio was second with three teams scoring 207, followed by Texas with four teams and 188 points and California with five teams and 168 points
John Curtis of River Ridge, LA and Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks, CA led the list of teams falling out of the top 25. The Curtis Patriots, who ranked 12th in the aggregate polls the previous week, lost to unranked Longview, TX 24-20 in an ESPN nationally televised game. The loss ended a 27-game Curtis winning streak.
Game results for all the top teams are available on the individual poll websites.
Here’s how the teams ranked in total points earned in the four polls after the September 20-21 weekend games. Points are awarded on the basis of 25 for first place, 24 for second, etc. in each of the four polls.
