Northwestern High School of Miami maintained first place in the national composite high school football rankings by defeating Coral Gables 52-10 in a November 17 Florida playoff game. The win gave the Bulls an 11-0 record.
Despite some tough playoff games, most of America’s top prep football teams just kept on winning as they headed into the Thanksgiving weekend.
Northwestern finished first in three of the four November 20 national high school polls and was second in the fourth poll, giving it 99 of a possible 100 composite points.
St. Xavier of Cincinnati topped the other poll to hold on to second place in the composite rankings with 94 points. The Bombers defeated cross-town rival Colerain 29-14 in a playoff game, dropping previously unbeaten Colerain down to 16th in the composite rankings.
Top 25 polls are conducted byUSA Today, the ESPN sports television network, Rise Magazine and the website Prep Nation. A fifth poll was eliminated from the composite rankings because it duplicated one of the other four. To determine the composite rankings, teams are awarded 25 points for first place, 24 for second, etc., in each of the four polls.
The top 25 included 20 unbeaten teams. Four were at 13-0, seven at 12-0, four at 11-0 and five at 10-0.
Thirty-two teams earned points in at least one of the four November 20 polls. Nearly 60 schools have been listed in at least one of the four polls since the start of the season. Most of them were dropped after suffering one loss, another indication of the tremendous competition for the national ratings. Some undefeated teams did not make the top 25.
Katy High and Carroll of Southlake, both of Texas, held on to third and fourth places in the composite rankings, with 87 and 84 points respectively. Katy was 11-0 through November 17. Carroll was 10-1, having lost only to Northwestern.
Florida continued to top all states in the composite rankings with three teams accumulating 239 points. Ohio was next with three teams and 189 points, followed by Texas with two teams and 171 points, and California with four teams and 147 points.
Here were the composite rankings and records of the top 25 as of November 20.
