Need there be a reminder to "remember the Titans?" It would be hard to forget them after their Saturday performance.
Offense, defense and special teams all brought the same power-packed punch as the New Jersey Titans melted the Maine Freeze 43-0 amid Passaic County's mid-April warmth.
Running back Kelly Hamill proved to be the offensive standout, picking up 143 yards on only seven carries. She scored three touchdowns.
"I think our team was making open holes," Hamill says, crediting her blockers and other teammates. "We've been preparing, we've been focused, and we just...knew what to do."
Hamill's biggest play, a 53-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter (her second in the period), made it 14-0 New Jersey following a successful two-point conversion. Her earlier score came courtesy of a 23-yard sprint.
"We're meshing well together, we're working well together," adds Hamill. "I think that contributed to everyone's success."
Some of that success was also quarterback April Meyer's. One of the five offensively-recorded touchdowns was hers, and she also finished her individual game with three carries for 27 yards, with minimal passing needed in the week one affair.
"Our offense was there...I think a lot of it's our preparation throughout the week," Meyer says. "It is our first game, and we're not going to let all of our tricks out of the bag."
Other Titan greats showing off their trickery and talents included Stacy Townsend, who passed and ran while filling in at QB in the second quarter and second half. Townsend scored a running touchdown, which was one of five carries for 34 yards.
Defensively, New Jersey held the Freeze to a net of only 12 positive yards. The Titans also recorded five turnovers, two via fumbles and three interceptions, one of which was run back for a touchdown to close out the first half with a Jersey lead of 36-0.
Next up for the women in blue: a trip across the Delaware River to play Hamill's former team, the Philadelphia Phoenix. Meyer says the drubbing the Titans just handed Maine not only helps their rhythm and game flow, it gives them confidence for upcoming opponents.
"It prepares us in giving us a chance to see where we need to fix mistakes...what we need to work more on," says Meyer. "Following through with people memorizing their plays, blocking schemes...at the level we need to be...it gives us a lot of different looks."
Titan fans will get their second chance to 'remember' when they face the Phoenix at 7pm, next Saturday, April 26th at Northeast High School in Philadelphia.
