Young never lost sight of the starting job; Kerry Collins' new two-year contract worth $14 million is only fueling his passion to return to his former starting role.

Young has indicated to Tennessee Titans head coach, Jeff Fisher, that he wants to be the starting quarterback again, the Tennessean reports. Whether he gets a fair chance will not be clear until training camp gets underway in July. Chances are that Collins will get every chance to succeed and fail due to his contract. If money ever talks, it is in this case.

Vince Young Starting Quarterback

Vince Young, who will be 26 when next season begins still has a long career ahead of him and he has already started 33 games in his three-year career. Last season was cut back to three games due to injury and poor performance. There were rumors of possible mental health problems but none of that was confirmed.

He is tall, 6'5", and mobile quarterback which is a rare combination in the NFL today. If he can perform up to the high expectations the Titans had for him when they drafted him 3rd overall in the 2006 draft, he should be the starter sometime.

However, he has to wrestle the starting job back from Collins. It is too early for Tennessee to give up on such a highly drafted player and with Collins' age catching up to him, Young will be given every chance to win the starting quarterback job in the next year.

Vince Young Statistics

Young has never had a breakout season as a throwing quarterback. He has thrown for 4,964 yards in three seasons. Even if he had completed the entire 2008 successfully, he still would not be in the top half of quarterbacks for throwing statistics. In none of his seasons has he thrown more touchdowns than interceptions which is a major concern if he is going to challenge Kerry Collins. While Collins is interception-prone, he threw for 12 touchdowns last season which equals Vince Young's best season.

However, Young makes up for the passing deficiency with his legs. He rushed for 552 yards as a rookie and 295 yards in his second-year. Constantly a threat with his arm and legs, Young gives the Titans a wrinkle that Collins could never offer.

Collins Interception Problems

The key to the quarterback battle will be Kerry Collins inability to stay away from throwing interceptions. Throughout his career, he has been known as a quarterback who can gain big chunks of yards with his arm, but too often he throws picks in the waiting arms of cornerbacks. He threw an interception in the loss at home to the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Divisional Playoffs while throwing no touchdowns.

Vince Young Trade Rumor

There are reports that the Lions and Vikings are interested in trading for Young but that is mere speculation. However, with draft day looming Tennessee may look to receive draft compensation for Young, if they deem him expendable or have other options. All signs indicate Young will be back as a backup next season with a chance to gain his starting job back.
